A cat cave is a dome of thick wool felt, merino or sheep wool, with one round opening cut into the front. No frame, no cushion, no zipper. The material is the structure, which is why a wool cat cave behaves nothing like a plush one.

Wool wicks moisture off a sleeping cat, holds warmth in winter, sheds it in summer, and resists odor for weeks because of the lanolin left in the fiber. Polyester plush does none of that.

Why A Wool Cat Cave Holds Its Dome And Plush Does Not

A felt cave starts as loose wool laid over a ball-shaped form, wetted with warm soapy water, and rubbed for hours until the scales on each fiber lock together. It shrinks by a third, the opening is cut, and it dries on the form: one continuous shell that carries its own weight. No stitching, no glue, no foam. The dome stays a dome with a 14 lb cat asleep on the roof.

A plush cave is polyester stretched over a foam shell. The fabric adds nothing structurally, and foam creases and sags. Within months the roof rests on the cat, which is the moment most cats stop going in.

Why It Works

Wool holds up to a third of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. Air trapped in the felt insulates in a cold room and lets heat out in a warm one. Lanolin, the wax on a sheep's fleece, survives felting in small amounts and slows the bacteria that make a bed smell.

  • Merino felts finer and softer. Coarse sheep wool felts stiffer, better for big cats.
  • Look for 6 mm of felt or more. Under 5 mm the dome dents and stays dented.
  • Push the dome down and the cave becomes a flat wool mat. Many cats pick the mat on hot afternoons.

Why Cats Choose A Cave Bed With One Door

A tunnel has two ends to monitor. A tent has a wide flap. A hooded bed's canopy stops short of the floor. Only the cave gives one sightline, and a cat watching one direction can drop into real sleep.

The Two Week Rule

Plenty of cats walk past a new cave for ten days, then one night go in and never come out. A dark hole gets inspected longest before it gets trusted. Do not put the cat in it, and do not move it every day.

  • Back the cave against a wall, opening toward the room, never toward a doorway.
  • A sunny sill beside a window perch beats a hallway floor.

Cat Cave Size: Measure The Door And The Floor

Most people buy the medium. Medium is built for a 9 to 11 lb cat. A 16 lb cat fits through its door, but inside it cannot turn without pressing all four walls, and a cat that has to back out of a bed does not go back in.

Cat Cave Beds For Kittens, Seniors, And Flat-Faced Cats

A closed dome holds body heat. Good for a bony 17 year old and for a kitten that cannot regulate its temperature yet. A problem for a Persian, Himalayan, or Exotic Shorthair, whose shortened airway moves less air and who overheats before a normal-faced cat would.

Sizing Tip

For a senior with stiff hips, choose the larger door. An arthritic cat cannot fold through a 6 inch opening the way it did at three, and a cave that hurts to enter loses to the sofa.

  • Flat-faced breeds: wool only, biggest door in the size, never beside a radiator or vent.
  • Never put a heating pad inside a closed dome.
  • Kittens do fine in an adult cave. A kitten-sized one is outgrown by month five.

Cleaning A Felt Cat Cave: Cold Water, No Dryer, Reshape Wet

Spot clean first. A damp cloth and a drop of wool soap handle most marks. A rubber brush lifts hair. Full washes: two or three a year.

Cold hand wash only. Hot water plus rubbing is how the felt was made, and it keeps felting. Warm water shrinks a cave a full size. Cold tub, wool soap, gentle squeezing.

Reshape while wet. Roll it in a towel to press water out, push the dome up from inside, and round the opening by hand. Felt keeps the shape it dries in.

What is a cat cave, and how is it different from a covered bed? +

A cat cave is a self-supporting dome with one round opening, most often a single piece of wool felt. A covered bed is any bed with a roof: hooded cushions, tents, cubes, tunnels. A hooded bed with a soft canopy and wide front is not a cave, and cats treat the two differently.

Is a wool cat cave too hot in summer? +

Less than you would think. Felt is porous, so warm air leaves through the walls, and wool pulls moisture off the coat. A sherpa dome runs noticeably hotter. If your cat still wants out in August, press the dome flat and it becomes a wool mat until fall.

What size cat cave does a 16 pound cat need? +

A large: opening 9 to 10 inches, interior floor 18 to 20 inches, interior height 12 to 13 inches. The medium in most lines has a 7 inch door and a 15 inch floor, which a big cat can enter but cannot turn around in. Check the interior numbers, not the outside diameter.

How do I wash a felt cat cave? +

Can I put a heating pad inside a cat cave? +

Not inside. A closed dome traps the heat with no way to move off it short of leaving. A low-wattage pet pad under the cave warms the felt floor gently and lets the cat choose. Skip it entirely for flat-faced breeds.

Merino or sheep wool cat cave? +

Both are sheep wool. Merino is finer, so it felts smoother, feels softer, and costs more. Coarser wool felts thicker and stiffer, which holds a dome better under cats over 14 lb. Small or fussy cat: merino. Heavy cat or several cats: the thicker coarse-wool cave lasts longer.
